Early in December we were able to take a quick weekend trip to South Carolina for Matt's little sister's mission farewell. Although we were only in town for just shy of 48 hours, we were able to see and do a lot and spend great time with family.
Early Saturday morning we left Blake in the great care of his aunts and attended the Columbia, South Carolina Temple with Katie. It was so nice to be able to be in the temple with her before she left for 18 months. Blake loved all the attention from his Aunt Mal and didn't even miss us.
After the temple we all loaded in the cars (made a quick but delicious stop at Bojangles...Southern fast food is definitely where it is at) and headed to Charleston. The warm weather combined with great company, delicious chocolates, and charming architecture made for a truly enjoyable afternoon. We started with a horse-drawn carriage tour of the historic city. It was so fascinating to learn more about the city. Blake tried to escape out of the carriage many times but we all survived and were able to keep him (sort of) contained.
We then spent the remainder of the afternoon exploring the city by foot. It was relaxing and so charming. I probably told Matt 10 times that we need to return one day and stay at one of the quaint B&B's to celebrate our anniversary. It was such a peaceful, romantic city.
Blake tripped and needed to kiss his knee better. We should be more sensitive parents but it was just too funny watching him try to kiss his knee. And he needed to stop every couple minutes to give it another kiss.
That evening we were all spoiled by Matt's dad and Olga in an early Christmas celebration. It was fun to see Blake so excited to open presents and play with some new toys.
On Sunday we attended their ward to listen to Katie speak. It was so evident that she is loved and admired by so many!! They have a great ward. Katie is a very polished public speaker and gave a really nice talk. She has been sharing her love for the Gospel of Jesus for a long time and so being a full-time missionary will come easily for her. We are so proud of her! After church we were able to mingle with a few of her ward members at her farewell party before we needed to head back to the airport. I am so grateful we were able to spend that time with her before she left!
