Today is a day that has been long anticipated. It's the day Matt graduates with his Masters in Accounting from BYU. There has been a lot of hard work and dedication that has brought him to this day. We have gone through this whole journey together, from start to finish. College years often are not that glamorous, but I wouldn't have had it any other way.
He started school at UVU when he got home from his mission. We started dating just a few days before the semester started.
He rocked his classes at UVU and got a killer GPA that really gave him momentum throughout his college years. He was able to get most his generals out of the way and decided he wanted to pursue his degree in accounting.
After a year at UVU Matt applied to transfer to BYU. He found out the night before we were married on Oct. 15, 2010 that he had been accepted.
He didn't take his first semesters at BYU easy. He dove right in and took all the pre-requisite classes for the accounting program. Between winter and spring semesters he completed them and did really well. He put in his application for the accounting program and we left to Mississippi for summer sales.
I remember exactly where I was when Matt called to tell me he found out he had been notified that a decision regarding his application had been made. I was sitting at the pool of our apartment complex and he had already left to knock doors that day. He called me and I could hear the nervousness in his voice. He sat down on a street curb and read me the letter. He had been accepted!!! We both cried a little bit before we called our parents and told them. BYU's accounting program is extremely competitive. (This year BYU's bachelor and Masters of Accountancy programs are ranked 1st in the nation.) Matt worked so hard and he was accepted!
After a grueling Jr. Core year of classes he then put in another application, this time to the Masters of Accounting program. If accepted he would only need to do one extra year of school and then graduate with his bachelors and Masters at the same time. We were once again nervous. Not from lack of confidence in Matt, but because of the competition. Not everyone is accepted but everyone is very qualified.
We found out just a few weeks after we found out we were expecting Blake that he was accepted. Prayers were answered. We were so grateful he could take this route to gain his Masters.
Fast forward two years and here we are today. 5 years later, 3 hopeful and successful applications later, and 2 degrees earned (okay really 3 because I earned my bachelors during this time).
I'm so incredibly proud of Matt. He had a vision of what he wanted to do and planned and executed his plan of how to get there. Many people don't know this, but he will be the first person in his immediate family to graduate college. Growing up he didn't invision himself going to college. Yet here he is with his Masters. I'm so proud of Matt for believing in himself and going after his dreams.
